NYC here I come!

Hello Lovelies!!

I've been having so much on my mind lately. I'm the type of person who stresses over everything. Even if its something I need to do in the far future.. I plan it all out with a lot of time in advance and already start freakin out over it. This is good when it comes to a few things. Like homework for example, If i get a homework today thats only due next week I cant contain myself, I have to do it right away because I know my mind wont be at peace until I dot it. WEIRD!!

With that said... I'm planning my trip to NYC!! I'm so excited that I cant stop thinking about it {hehe} last time I went to NY was with  my family in 2007 and my hubby has never been, so I decided what better place to spend new years other then NY? Now, if it was for Renan, we would never even look at a picture of NY. He's more of the camping, hiking, lets get dirty and sweaty type of guy {complete opposite of me}
He thinks he's going to be extremly bored there. So i'm determined to prove him wrong!

Since I've only been to NY once. I only know the very basics.

Were going to see the "Statue of Liberty"

Empire State building

Central Park {I hope it looks like this}

Were going to watch a broadway show.

But thats basically all I know about NYC.

So if you have ever been there or you live there...
What are the best restaurants?
Best bakeries?
Favorite Broadway show?
Places to go?
Things to see?
good parties to celebrate the new years?
good museums?
any good website suggestions for show tickets or passes?
any good and affordable hotels you might know in times square?

I want to make sure we stay busy the whole time, with lots of fun things to do and see! Help me make this trip unforgettable PLEASE?!

Thanks LOVELIES!

  1. I went to NYC my senior year of high school - just before 9/11. I even went on top of the twin towers, crazy right? Anyway, we did all that fun stuff including seeing 4 broadway shows! I went with my choir group..

Then I went back about 3 or 4 years ago with my husband and another couple to visit some friends who live in Brooklyn. It was completely different because they just wanted to show us Brooklyn and we barely even ventured to the city! But we did go to central park and have a nice stroll :) Have fun planning and going on your trip!

  3. I don't know how anyone could possibly be bored in NY, especially around the Holiday season- its beautiful here and its also hectic. In terms of museums you have to go to the MET, its the largest and has the most versatile collection- my fav paintings are Degas ballet dancers. You also want to see the display windows at Macy's Herald Square (where they filmed miracle on 34th street). The christmas display windows are magical, even a jaded New Yorker like myself stops are marvels at them. My favoriate place to eat is Sofrito, if you like Latin food- its great, totally delicious, sophistocated and authentic Puerto Rican cusine.

  4. I stayed at the Marriott in Times Square and it was AWESOME to be able to look out on at night. I don't usually stay in the City when I go though, mostly I go in for the day to shop and take the train back to my relatives in Jersey.

Can't wait to see the responses you get - I might pack the info away for my next trip :)

Okay, so you should go to the "TOP OF THE ROCK" ... top of the rockefellar .... its awesome!!

Also, we stayed at Hotel Chandler ..it was so cute and not too expensive .. good location as well.
Although, if you want to stay "in the city" there is a Marriott I belive right in the middle of Times Square.
Ferera's is a little bakery in Little Italy ... SOO GOOD! Also, carnegie deli is sooo yum ..its a cute deli a few blocks away from times square. Lets see ..what else!? umm .. go to this website: http://www.citypass.com/new-york and you can get a pass there for a few attractions ..its better than waiting in line when you get there.
Thats all for now lol but if I think of anything else, I will let you know!

  11. I absolutely love love love New York City! The last time I was there I saw Wicked on Broadway! Such a neat experience! I would highly recommend going to Broadway and trying to get tickets for a show, any show! Also go check out the Today Show! And La Maison Du Chocolate has some of the best chocolates! check it out!

  12. Do not do Times Square for NYE! I did that in 2006 and it was just awful! I repeat do not! You have to get there at like 3:00 to get in, there is no place to use the rest room, no food/drink. You basically just stand there for like 9 hours. It was the worst NYE of my life!

  13. I am soooo jealous! NY is on my bucket list. Someday. So I have no tips other than to think of me while strolling the streets. :)

  16. So exciting!! I live in NY just about a half hour from NYC! Lot's of great things to do;

-Eat in Little Italy! My favorite restaurant is Casa Bella on the corner of Mulberry and Hester St. They have great (cheap) lunch specials and it is right around the corner from Chinatown, so there is a ton to do/see there. Also in Little Italy, Ferrara's bakery has the BEST canolis in the entire world! Seriously, they are delicious.

-Shopping on 5th Avenue/Madison avenue = amazing! Bloomingdales, Saks, Lord & Taylor have AMAZING holiday window displays!! Check them out (and make sure to stop by Dylan's Candy Bar for snacks/when the hubby gets tired and needs a sugar rush).

-Grand Central (just avoid rush hour times, aka before 9am and from 330-6pm) is awesome during the day! It is definitely a landmark to visit, and there are markets inside that are lovely to explore.

-Rockefeller center. Go see the Rockettes!

-See a broadway show! I've heard amazing things about Mary Poppins!

-See if you can get tickets to a taping of a show! I've seen the taping of the Nate Berkus show and it was so fun! Other shows that tape live are Martha Stewart, Rachael Ray, David Letterman, SNL. Check out the websites to see how to get tickets!!

Shoot me an e-mail if you want any other suggestions!!!

  17. ok so i am just answering with the first things that pop in my head:
    What are the best restaurants?
there is an italian place called lamarca in the gramercy neighborhood that is pretty affordable - and yummy. gramercy tavern is a little swankier - i've never been, but i've heard good things. you also MUST go to the shake shack and have a shack burger. sant ambroeus is cute too.

    Best bakeries?
ok so there is this french place that is famous for their macarons - i can't recall the name, but look it up and go there! they JUST opened in ny! i also love rice to riches (if you like rice pudding) and there is a cupcake place called sugar sweet sunshine - they are my favorite, but there is always billy's bakery, crumbs and magnolia

    Favorite Broadway show?
i enjoyed spamalot - i think that was the last one i saw, haven't been in ages - i kind of want to see anything goes, but i am too lazy and too cheap to do broadway right now

    Places to go?
the museums are great - the met, the moma, the galleries in chelsea - the highline (and chelsea market is right there too) - shopping in soho - union square (the farmers markets are fun to walk through - and they have a christmas market but it will likely be closed before you get to ny) - southstreet seaport if you feel like checking out way downtown

    Things to see?
oh i should have put this elsewhere - but jacques torres hot chocolate OR city bakery hot chocolate (since it is the winter when you go) - central park is an obvious one (strawberry fields, the fountain, etc) - and check out some of the little parks too - there are some real gems! - i love walking around the gramercy neighborhood and gramercy park

good parties to celebrate the new years?
this i do not know - but i imagine just about every bar or restaurant will be doing something special - especially any fancy fancy rooftop bars

    good museums?
the met would be my first choice - and word of advice - it is donation so you could give them a buck and get in - moma is nice but very expensive - the chelsea galleries are free but require a bit of walking and adventuring

any good website suggestions for show tickets or passes?
there is a ticket booth in times square - i dont know much about it bc i never got tickets there, but i hear it is the place to snag a deal - make sure you use hopstop to figure out getting around on the subways! and menupages.com is an AWESOME way to find restaurants and places to eat

any good and affordable hotels you might know in times square?
check out places like the marriott and your usual chain types

  19. My favorite Broadway show is definitely Phantom of the Opera!! But I also really liked Chicago. Definitely try to see a show! If you don't care what show you go to, you can go to red box in Times Square and stand in line and get cheap tickets for whatever they have available. Definitely shop up and down 5th avenue!

  20. So, I lived here for 5 years and just happen to be in NYC right now, so here goes.

My favorite restaurants in the city: Most of these are below 14th st because that's where I lived, but you should venture downtown even if you stay uptown, it's gives you a feel of what it's really like to NYC since no one really lives in midtown where tourists spend most of their time.
Lupa - Mario Batali Italian restaurant - So much better than any restaurant I've eaten at in Little Italy. Little Italy is actually really touristy and hard to find authentic Italian these days.
Rosa Mexicano Union Square - Best Mexican in NYC, fantastic pomegranate margaritas!
Pearl Oyster Bar - Not for oysters mind you, it's the Lobster Roll that is AMAZING! But I've heard the rest of the seafood is amazing as well I've just never tried anything because the lobster roll is SO GOOD!

Best bakery: Magnolia, get a cupcake and some banana pudding, the one downtown West Village is the best one, the one uptown again is a bit touristy.

Favorite Broadway Show: I've seen about ten and hands down Wicked was the best.

Places to go: Definitely do Central Park, you could spend a whole day there, take the SUBWAY, go downtown union square and spend some time just walking. Also make sure to do Wall St. just to see it.

Museums: MET is my favorite, it's fun to spend some time walking around and then stop at the bar for a drink, then walk around some more and on to the next bar for another drink. I think there are 3 or 4 bars in there, it's a lot of fun to walk from one to another looking at the art.

I don't have any hotel suggestions because I don't spend time in Times Square, you'll quickly find out why once you're there, too crowded! But for cheap broadway shows there's a kiosk in the middle of times square you go to every morning for half off broadway shows.

Hope you have a great time!

  21. You have GOT to go to Rosa Mexicano! It's a mexican restaurant, but it has flair and is hip and awesome and they have pomegranate margaritas!!!

  22. Sadly, I have yet to visit New York. It will happen one day, though!!

  23. I LOVE NYC!! My best friend just moved there and I'm going to visit her next weekend! I know you'll have just an exceptional time!! I try to walk through a couple galleries while I'm there to gain more inspiration!

  25. I just returned from NYC and I have a hotel suggestion for you! We usually stay with friends but ended up at The Library Hotel for one night. It's a super cute boutique hotel a block and a half from Grand Central Station, which is another thing I should have mentioned, definitely walk around inside Grand Central! Anyway, hotel is tiny, but super cute and while a bit expensive it's cheaper or comparable to most NYC hotels and not far from Times Square/midtown.

And a few more things I thought of that are super fun. Go to the Comedy Cellar in the village one night, HILARIOUS regardless of who's performing.

AND my favorite thing EVER to do in NYC that only locals know about. Go to PDT, it's a speakeasy bar in the east village. Pay attention! Go to Crif Dog on St. Marks between 1st Ave and Ave. A, walk inside and immediately go to the phone booth on the left, pick up the phone and wait for the back of the phone booth to open up. SUPER CUTE BAR that has SUPER CUTE DRINKS served along with hot dogs and hamburgers from Crif Dog, DELICIOUS and so NYC. If you call at 3pm the day that you decide you want to go you can prob get a reservation, otherwise you have to hope for a seat at the bar. SO MUCH FUN!
    http://nymag.com/listings/bar/pdt/

I also have a DO NOT bother list for you.

DO NOT do Times Square for NYE, it's a little slice of hell.
DO NOT go to the Guggenheim unless you REALLY love modern art. The building itself is cool and fun to walk up through because of the neat architecture, but ultimately I found it to be a waste of time, MET is SO much better there's no comparison.

As you can see I REALLY miss NYC and hope you have an excellent time!
